United States President Donald Trump said he did not feel afraid when he was evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner after a gunman attempted to enter the venue.
"I wasn't worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world," Trump said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" the day after the incident at a Washington, DC hotel.
The incident occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where a 31-year-old man, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, opened fire near a security checkpoint. The shooting caused panic among those present and the immediate intervention of law enforcement, who arrested the perpetrator on the spot. He is expected to face justice.
US authorities have announced that investigations are underway by the FBI and counterterrorism units, while the motives for the attack remain unclear. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that preliminary information suggests that the suspect may have targeted senior White House officials.
At the time of the incident, Trump was at the event along with important figures from the US government, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt and adviser Stephen Miller.
After being evacuated from the scene, the president emphasized to reporters the danger his position carries: "I can't imagine a more dangerous profession than this."
In a statement released on Sunday, the White House said the president "remains undaunted" after what was described as an assassination attempt, during which shots were fired at the event he and members of his cabinet were attending.
