IDF Chief of Staff raises alarm: We are facing a crisis in the army ranks, more
Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, sent an unusual letter to government officials, warning of a growing crisis in the army's ranks and calling on lawmakers to "fulfill their responsibility" by advancing emergency legislation to support regular and reservist soldiers.

“The central challenge we face in the current campaign is the expansion of the IDF’s missions ,” Zamir wrote, emphasizing the need to protect border communities while proactively eliminating threats. He stressed that the military must be able to act proactively and offensively on multiple fronts.

Zamir warned that a decision to shorten compulsory service, despite his clear call last year to extend compulsory service, would result in serious damage and a decline in the IDF's order of battle, including a shortage of thousands of combat soldiers and support personnel.

"The heavy price will be paid by reserve soldiers and their families, who are a vital asset of the IDF ," he wrote.

In his letter, Zamir called for the immediate advancement of three key laws: a temporary extension of compulsory service, a change to the framework of reserve duty, which he said is “not suitable in its current format,” and a revised law on military recruitment in line with the army’s operational needs. Zamir warns that the IDF must increase

"In light of the expansion of missions in the coming years and the IDF's determination to carry them out with excellence, the IDF must grow. We need a large and strong army," he declared.

The comments come alongside recent reports that Zamir warned ministers at a security cabinet meeting about a potential manpower crisis, saying it was raising red flags about the situation.
