The European Public Prosecutor's Office is asking the Greek parliament to lift the immunity of 11 sitting MPs, including Rural Development Minister Costas Tsiaras and Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis, as part of an investigation into the widening agricultural subsidy scandal.
"The investigation concerns crimes and offences against the EU's financial interests, specifically incitement to dishonesty, wire fraud and false declaration for the unlawful benefit of a third party," the European Public Prosecutor's Office said in its statement.
According to what "Kathimerini" reports, these are 11 MPs from the ruling party, in addition to Kefalogiannis and Tsiaras:
1-Kostas Karamanlis
2-Kostas Skrekas
3-Katerina Papakosta
4-Notis Mitarakis
5-Dimitris Vartzopoulos
6-Maximos Senetakis
7-Vasilios Vasiliadis
8-Christos Boukoros
9-Theophilos Leontarides
Most did not respond to a request for comment, while the rest said they had not been notified of the request. The case file relates to specific criminal offenses allegedly committed in 2021, while the investigation into the OPEC+ scandal continues for years to come, according to senior officials.
Five former MPs are also under investigation, according to the Prosecutor's Office. In addition, information has emerged regarding the possible involvement of a former Minister and Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, in the exercise of their duties. According to the information, these are Spilios Livanos and Fotini Arabatzis.
However, Article 86 of the Greek Constitution stipulates that, if, during an investigation, evidence emerges relating to criminal offences that may have been committed by ministers in the exercise of their duties, even if they no longer hold this position, this evidence must be transmitted immediately to Parliament.
