Russia-Moldova 'quarrel' over $709 billion gas debt, EU: Moscow's

Gazprom will cut off gas supplies to Moldova from January 1, 2025 due to its refusal to pay its debt to the company, the Russian company announced in an official statement.

Gazprom sent a notice to Moldovagaz, a subsidiary of the Moldovan government, saying that “based on the provisions of the contract and applicable norms of Russian legislation, Gazprom will cease natural gas supplies to the Republic of Moldova at 8 a.m. Moscow time on January 1, 2025.”

The restriction, the Russian company added, "will remain in force until Gazprom notifies Moldovagaz in writing of a second decision."

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean condemned Gazprom's decision, stating that his government does not recognize the Russians' claimed debt of $709 million, which he said has not been "certified by an independent international assessment."

Citing the conclusions of British and Norwegian auditing firms, he claims that Moldova's debt is around $8.6 million, much lower than that declared by Gazprom.

Recean added that his country is diversifying natural gas supplies to reduce dependence on Russians, but acknowledged that the decision, which takes effect on January 1, will cause problems in his country with its heating system.

Recean stated that the government will "carefully analyze legal options, including recourse to international arbitration," to protect national interests.

"Our country is ready to cope with any situation that arises after the Kremlin's decision," he assured.

Russia, which supplies Moldova with about two billion cubic meters of gas per year via Ukraine, is demanding $709 million in debt, but the European Union accuses Moscow of using natural gas to blackmail Moldova.
