President Joe Biden signed legislation to fund the US government through mid-November, avoiding a partial shutdown with less than an hour left before the fiscal budget expires.
The president posted on the X network, formerly known as Twitter, a photo of himself signing the bill late Saturday night. In the message, he urged Congress to begin work immediately to pass the budget for the full fiscal year.
The US Senate, in a rare weekend meeting, approved a funding bill Saturday night, sending it to President Joe Biden for signature and avoiding a federal government shutdown that would hurt the nation's economy.
The bill, which passed the Senate 88-9 after passing the House, will fund the federal government until Nov. 17. The measure includes $16 billion in disaster relief requested by President Biden, but does not include funds to help Ukraine fight Russian aggression.
After the vote, President Biden issued a statement saying the passage of the bill prevented "an unnecessary crisis that would have caused unnecessary pain to millions of American workers."
If the bill is not passed by Congress and signed by the president by midnight Saturday, the federal government would partially shut down.
About 4 million service members and US government employees would not be paid, although essential services such as air traffic control and official border points of entry would still be well staffed. Pensioners may not receive their monthly payments in time to pay bills and buy food, and national parks may close. For days this seemed inevitable./VOA
