Italy between political investigations and a crisis of confidence...
For a long time, the political narrative in Italy has been polarized: the left-wing judiciary, the right-wing politics persecuted. But the recent case of Milan and then that of Matteo Ricci in the Marche have overturned this myth. The blow to two important figures and institutions of the left is happening on the eve of regional elections and at the height of a reform campaign by the Meloni government.
Are we dealing with independent justice that spares no one? Or a more subtle game, where politics on both sides begins to feel that they no longer control the "fourth estate"?
Today's Italy: Justice as a political factor, not as a party
According to Stefano Folli's analysis in La Repubblica, the Italian judiciary is no longer "leftist", but has become an autonomous structure, operating on the logic of constant control. No political party is protected anymore. Anyone, anytime and for anything is attacked, often with greater political than legal consequences.
This situation risks turning every investigation into an electoral weapon, and every prosecutor into a battlefield between campaigns, fragile coalitions, and identity crises. More than justice, we have a reality where the investigation is worth more than the verdict, because its effect on public opinion is immediate.
Why is this analysis important for Albania?
Because the Italian scheme is very well known in Albania. Here too:
1. Criminal investigations against officials are conducted on the eve of elections,
2. Politicized media amplify them as verdicts before the courts speak,
3. Justice is perceived as a "political instrument" more than as an institution of justice.
If Italy, a consolidated democracy, is facing such a crisis of the politics-justice relationship, Albania is in even greater danger. Especially now, when the justice reform is still in process and has not yet produced a credible balance.
Ricci, Conte and the consequences for the European left
If Ricci is forced to resign, this will be not only a defeat for the Italian left, but a signal to the entire European progressive spectrum: that if you do not build political immunity in the face of judicial blows, even when they are dubious, overthrow is a matter of time.
Giuseppe Conte, the only one with quick political reflexes and crisis management experience, is expected to maneuver to prevent the 5 Star Movement from being involved in the possible collapse of the Democratic Party. And in this game, he could seek more weight in the coalition if the elections in the Marche turn out to be damaged by the investigations.
The Italy of 2025 is the closest example of a deep crisis of trust between powers, where no one is safe, neither the left nor the right. Investigations are no longer one-sided tools, but the mirror of a state where institutions act independently, but often without transparency and democratic control.
