The situation at the Aggias Detention Center in Chania, Crete, has spiraled out of control, with 1,140 migrants being housed, a record figure that exceeds any capacity.
The Deputy Mayor of Chania, Eleni Zervoudaki, in an interview with KRITI TV, described the situation as a "health bomb" and "unprecedented misery", emphasizing that the country is completely overpopulated.
"There is no more room. People are literally being thrown out. The situation is dramatic," she said, according to local portal neakriti.gr.
Zervoudaki stressed that 342 migrants have been stranded in the center since August 18, without any transfer to other structures, despite the fact that empty centers exist in other parts of Greece.
"These people should have been relocated long ago to other structures in Central Greece," she added.
Despite continuous complaints from the Municipality of Chania and the Coast Guard, no solution has been provided so far by the relevant authorities, including the Prosecutor's Office.
In the midst of the crisis, local authorities are also facing a heavy financial burden, as just feeding 1,100 people requires around 140,000 euros per day, a huge burden on the local budget.
