Construction scandal 'ignites' Milan, mayor does not resign;

Protests erupt in Milan after the scandal involving Edi Rama's friend...

The construction scandal, involving architect Stefano Boeri, who concreted Tirana, has plunged Milan into chaos.

At the center of the debate is Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who has strongly stated that he will not resign and will see out his term.

" I have received more phone calls and messages during this period than when I was elected mayor ," Sala said before the municipal council, underlining that the support from citizens, colleagues, and even his political critics has been extraordinary.

He stressed that he remains " committed with passion, responsibility and love for the city ", and called for politics not to be mixed with investigations, describing the publication of confidential information in the media as a serious violation of institutional ethics.

In the same session, there was a dramatic development: Giancarlo Tancredi, advisor for Urban Regeneration and one of Sala's closest collaborators, resigned. With his voice trembling, Tancredi said: " My conscience is clear. My resignation is an act to restore calm and help clarify the situation. I am disappointed by the position of some majority forces that did not support the guarantee ."

Tancredit's resignation is expected to have serious consequences for the political balance within the municipality and has opened a new wound within the majority. He was a key figure in the city's strategic urban transformation projects.

Beyond the political crisis, Mayor Sala has reaffirmed his commitment to continue working, emphasizing that the issue of the San Siro stadium, one of the most controversial urban development projects in Milan, will be back on the table from September. He promised to fulfill his commitments until the end of his mandate, despite the storm that has engulfed him.

His speech ended with a long standing ovation from most councilors, signaling strong political support for him. But the question that remains is: will this be enough to preserve the city's political stability?

While inside Palazzo Marino (the city hall) Sala defended his institutional integrity and commitment to the city, outside, tensions with protesting citizens erupted into clashes with the police.

Several dozen activists from the Cambiare Rotta, Potere al Popolo, Cub and Rifondazione Comunista movements attempted to force their way into the City Council premises, but were stopped by police in riot gear. During and after Sala's speech, the protesters clashed with the police cordon and were pushed back with shields. They then continued their protest in Piazza della Scala, demanding the resignation of the mayor and his entire administration. /Adapted from "Corriere Della Sera"
