Pope Leo spoke by phone with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas about the war in Gaza and violence in the occupied West Bank, the Vatican said on July 21.
This was the first official conversation between the two leaders since Leo was elected head of the Catholic Church.
" The Holy Father has reiterated his call for international humanitarian law to be fully respected, emphasizing in particular the obligation to protect civilians and holy sites, the prohibition of disproportionate force and the forcible transfer of populations," the Vatican said, REL reports.
The Pope also said that "there is an urgent need to provide assistance to the most vulnerable as a result of the conflict and to allow humanitarian aid."
This conversation took place after last weekend, the Pope spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a day after an Israeli airstrike hit the only Catholic Church in Gaza, killing three people.
On Sunday, Leon condemned the "barbarity" of the war in Gaza and reiterated his call for a peaceful solution.
The Vatican, which supports the two-state solution, officially recognized the state of Palestine through an agreement signed in 2015, becoming one of the first countries in Europe to recognize the state.
