EU extends protection status for Ukrainians until March 2027

EU member states unanimously approved today the extension, until March 2027, of the temporary protection status for over 4 million Ukrainians who fled their country due to Russia's aggressive war.

Since March 2022, the EU has provided safety and shelter to over 4 million refugees from Ukraine. People under "temporary protection" do not need to apply for asylum, thus easing the pressure on national asylum systems.

In addition to extending temporary protection, Member States are discussing the preparation for a coordinated transition from temporary protection to other legal statuses (residence).

Persons benefiting from temporary protection enjoy the same rights throughout the EU, which include residence, access to the labour market and housing, medical assistance, social welfare assistance and access to education for children.

EU law on temporary protection sets minimum standards of protection. The actual level of assistance may vary from one Member State to another.

If conditions in Ukraine change, allowing for a gradual return and sustainable reintegration, the European Commission may submit a proposal to the Council of the EU to suspend temporary protection, before its scheduled expiry date.
