Turkish law does not allow people without higher education to run in presidential elections...

Turkey's "Sultan" Recep Tayyip Erdogan is using some of the strangest methods to hit his opponents. The person seen as the favorite to defeat him in the upcoming elections is Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. But the door to running against Erdogan has been closed to him.

Imamoglu faced charges of "falsifying official documents" regarding his diploma, and this Tuesday the city's university announced that the diplomas of 28 people, including the mayor of Istanbul, have been revoked.

Imamoglu was facing charges based on a report prepared by the Higher Education Council of Turkey (YOK), according to which his transfer in 1990 to Istanbul University's School of Business Administration was not legal and therefore his degree should be annulled.

Current developments do not allow him to be a candidate for the country's Presidency, as having a higher education degree is a prerequisite for entering the race for this position.

" According to the findings of the "Research Report" of the Presidium of the Supervisory Council of Higher Education and the report compiled by the Research Commission assigned to this institution, for the individuals who were irregularly transferred to the English language program of the School of Business Administration of our University (the report of the graduates mentioned in 1990) the Supervisory Council of Higher Education, as well as the graduations and diplomas that these persons have received on the basis of these decisions will be revoked and canceled for "lack" and "clear errors". The decision taken and all data and documents that constitute the basis of this decision will be urgently sent to the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office and the Presidency of the Council of Higher Education ," the university said.

Imamoglu reacted after this decision by saying: " The days when those who made this decision will be held accountable before history and justice are near. The march of our people, who have been hungry for justice, law and democracy, will not stop . "

Last week, a lawyer for Imamoglu told Reuters that there were no irregularities with the mayor's degree and that he did not expect an "illegal" decision from the university. The school had previously ruled that the degree was legal, the lawyer added.

The opposition parties CHP and IYI criticized the move. " Cancelling Mr. Imamoglu's diploma goes beyond purging a political rival ," IYI chairman Musavat Dervisoglu said in X.

CHP chairman Ozgur Ozel said the decision was a "dark stain" and that his party would announce Imamoglu as its presidential candidate on March 23.

Imamoglu, who has long been a challenger to Erdogan, has increased his criticism of the president and his government in recent months and has announced his candidacy to run for president in the next elections, scheduled for 2028. /Pamphlet
