The G20 meeting has begun in New Delhi with the absence of two key figures, while neither of them has explained the reasons for the boycott. Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn't even plan to make a video message, sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov instead.
Some experts say Putin is evading an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, even though India is not a member of the court. Or the head of the Kremlin is trying not to personally face criticism and accusations because of the war in Ukraine.
The reasons why Chinese leader Xi Jinping is absent are also unclear. China will be represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang. Some experts say Xi wanted to stay "on the same page" with Russia, while others speculate that Xi will not face Mr Biden. Also, China's relations with the host country, India, are not the best at the moment. However, the division within the ranks of the G20 is evident.
The media reports that the delegations were able to reach consensus on all topics... except Ukraine. Host India pulled out when participants were to denounce Russian aggression. Western leaders - Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak in particular - have said they will try to use the meeting to encourage India to take an "active diplomatic approach" to Russia.
While the representatives of the European Union want to draw attention to global issues of food security, a topic directly related to the war in Ukraine.
