US President Donald Trump appears less optimistic about the chances of a meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
The recent phone call with Putin seems to have dampened the spirits of the White House leader, who lowered expectations for the much-discussed meeting, expressing more reserve about it.
"I don't know if they'll meet. Maybe they'll meet. Maybe not ," Trump said.
Last week, Trump's spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt, stated that Putin had agreed to a direct meeting with Zelensky in the coming weeks.
After the Trump-Putin meeting, there was much talk that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky could take place soon, but the Kremlin has since downplayed these expectations.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently stated that Moscow and Kiev must first agree on peace and then a meeting between the presidents could seal the deal.
Zelensky, for his part, said he would hold talks with US representatives later this week about possible negotiations with Russia to end the war. He met in Kiev with US special envoy Keith Kellogg, with whom he reportedly discussed possible sanctions against Moscow, while continuing to push the idea of security guarantees in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
