Spain will offer Ukraine 1 billion euros in military aid this year after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met in Madrid to sign a "very important" defense and security deal.
Although the exact details of the deal have not been made public, the Spanish government said its aid would "allow Ukraine to prioritize its capabilities, including its air defense".
The bilateral deal was agreed two days after Russia's attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv killed 18 people and as EU leaders grow increasingly angry at Hungary's efforts to block aid to Ukraine.
" This agreement] will allow Ukraine to increase its capabilities, including its essential air defense systems to protect its civilians, cities and infrastructure, which are still suffering indiscriminate attacks as seen this weekend in Kharkiv ," Sánchez said at a press conference after the signing.
He said Spain had already committed to supplying Patriot missiles and said it would also send "another group of Leopard tanks and above all ammunition".
The Spanish government said the agreement would also cover other areas, such as intelligence, training, demining, reconstruction and humanitarian aid.
Zelenskiy, who recently issued a desperate plea for world leaders to attend a "peace summit" next month in Switzerland, said he had briefed Sanchez on the situation on the front lines and was grateful to Spain for its tangible and truly life-saving support.
