Because no extenuating circumstances can apply to death squads filming themselves attacking a rave party , killing 260 young people and taking others hostage.
Because making excuses for it, arguing that this barbarism is a response to previous oppression or humiliation, reproduces a shame as old as anti-Semitism, which always boils down to arguments that, ultimately, Jews are responsible for their misfortunes .
But there is a second reason that prevents us from entering into the reasons for this pogrom. It's just that even the killers who came like wolves into Israeli cities had no reason and didn't care what this or that Israeli government might have said or done.
Having not had the slightest occupying force in their territory for eighteen years, they had no territorial claims to declare, no war objectives to oppose. Or if they had an objective, it was no longer, to use von Clausewitz's words, an exact objective, a Ziel, an apparent victory, a half-victory, a compromise.
It was a Zweck, a vague and unstated objective and not by chance, because this objective expressed nothing but pure and simple hatred, the idea that the enemy is too much on this earth and therefore there is also the will to exterminate him.
It is what is called in polemology a total war.
