
The U.S. Secret Service announced today that it was investigating reports of gunshots overnight near Lafayette Park, which is directly across from the White House. According to the agency, no one was reported injured and no suspects were found after a thorough search of the park and surrounding area after midnight.
The Secret Service announced that it was cooperating with the District of Columbia Police (DCPD) and the U.S. Park Police.
President Donald Trump was spending the weekend at the White House. There was no immediate comment from the White House about the incident. Normal White House operations continued, but security in the area was immediately increased.
Lafayette Park has been fenced off for weeks due to renovations. The incident occurred shortly after midnight and was initially reported as gunfire in the area of the 7-acre park, located north of the White House.
The investigation continues and authorities are looking into all possibilities, including searching for a possible vehicle involved.
The incident follows several other serious security incidents. On February 22, 2026, a 21-year-old man armed with a rifle and a gasoline can forced his way into the security perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Trump's Florida estate. He was shot and killed by Secret Service agents after he pointed his gun at agents.
As for President Donald Trump, he has survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign: in July in Pennsylvania he was shot in the ear and in September at a golf course in Florida a man was arrested for vandalism with a gun.
