Another tragic event has been recorded in the Mediterranean, where around 80 migrants are missing after a boat capsized in the search and rescue zone off the coast of Libya.
According to survivors' testimonies, there were about 110 people on board, while only 32 of them managed to be rescued. So far, only two bodies have been recovered from the sea.
Footage from the scene shows the dramatic moments as survivors cling to the overturned boat, waiting for help. The vessel, a wooden boat about 12-15 meters long, had set off from Tripoli and capsized in the open sea, leaving dozens of people in the water for hours.
The rescue operation was carried out by the Italian Coast Guard, with the assistance of several merchant ships in the area, which intervened by launching lifeboats and extracting the survivors.
The alarm about the boat in danger was initially given by a non-governmental organization's aircraft, which detected the overturned vehicle and people in the water or clinging to it.
The survivors and bodies were then transported to a coast guard vessel and taken ashore.
On board were citizens from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt. Meanwhile, international organizations have reacted to the event. Save the Children expressed concern about the tragedy, highlighting the contrast with the symbolism of the Easter holiday.
"On a day that for many symbolizes resurrection and hope, we mourn the young lives lost on the shores of Libya. Once again, the Mediterranean has become a border of death," the reaction said.
The organization emphasizes that there is still no exact figure for the missing and it remains unclear whether there are children among them.
According to its data, since 2014, around 34,500 people have lost their lives or are missing in the Mediterranean, while this year alone the number of victims has exceeded 800, including many children.
