US President Joe Biden held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the first between the two leaders since February 15, according to diplomatic sources.
It is learned that since that last phone call, the relationship between the two has become more and more tense and that the leaders have communicated through their officials and not directly.
Biden has publicly articulated growing concern over the rising death toll in Gaza, and over the weekend, he appeared to back comments made late last week by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on early elections.
Schumer had called for new elections in Israel, saying Netanyahu had "lost his way."
Asked about the speech, Biden said: " He gave a good speech, and I think he expressed a serious concern not only from him, but from many Americans . "
The White House and Netanyahu's office will release a summary of the call later.
The summary of their recent phone call made it clear that Biden had told Netanyahu that no military operation in Rafah should take place without a credible and workable plan to ensure safety and support for the more than one million people sheltered there. .
Since that call, Netanyahu has confirmed that a military operation will take place, but that civilians will be displaced before it begins.
It is not clear whether any military plans were seen or approved by the Americans. Netanyahu said the operation would not begin for several weeks.
This call will be the 20th between the two since the October 7 Hamas attack. It also marks the longest gap between calls, a full 32 days./ SkyNews
