A cargo ship sank off the Greek island of Lesbos due to a sea storm Sunday morning, leaving 13 of its crew members missing and another rescued, Greek authorities said.
The ship was en route to Istanbul from Alexandria, Egypt, and was carrying 6,000 tons of salt, the Greek coast guard said. Its crew consisted of 14 members, including eight Egyptians, four Indians and two Syrians, according to the coast guard.
The ship reported a mechanical problem at 7:00 a.m. Sunday and sent a distress signal before disappearing about five miles northwest of Lesbos, Greek authorities said.
One Egyptian was rescued, a Coast Guard spokeswoman told The Associated Press.
She said eight commercial ships, two helicopters and a frigate of the Greek Navy are searching for survivors.
The coast guard ships encountered difficulties to reach the area of the incident, due to the turbulent waters, she emphasized. The spokeswoman spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media about this case./ REL
