Tragedy in Kocani/ Vučić ignores protests, declares March 18 a day of mourning

The Serbian government, at the proposal of President Aleksandar Vučić, will declare Tuesday, March 18, 2025, a day of mourning in Serbia following the fire in North Macedonia that killed at least 59 people and injured over 100.

President Vučić has ignored yesterday's protest by students in Belgrade. The protest, considered historic in Belgrade, lasted for about 5 hours, blocking all the streets and squares in the Serbian capital. In his reaction, yesterday Vučić said that about 56 people were injured, but none were seriously injured and that the person injured in Nikola Pašić Square is not in danger of life.

Meanwhile, today Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić decided that March 18 will be a day of mourning in Serbia.

"Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić discussed this morning the tragedy in Kočani, North Macedonia, where a large number of citizens lost their lives in a fire in a discotheque, after which it was decided that March 18 will be a day of mourning in Serbia," the Serbian government said in a statement.

59 people were killed after a fire broke out at a discotheque in Kocani during a concert by a famous Macedonian band. Most of the injured have been transferred to the Kocani General Hospital, where they are still receiving medical attention.
