A serious rail accident has occurred in Spain, on the high-speed train line that runs through the Andalusia region.

Several carriages of a train derailed and hit a train coming from the opposite direction head-on, causing a tragedy with serious human consequences.

According to the first official balance of the authorities, at least 39 people have lost their lives, El Pais reports. However, the Ministry of Health of the Government of Andalusia has announced that the number of victims remains "undetermined", due to the difficulties in intervening in three carriages that ended up in an embankment. Emergency services and passenger testimonies, quoted by the media, speak of around 100 injured, some of them in very serious condition, as well as people who are still trapped among the metal rubble.

The accident involved an Iryo train, departing from Malaga and bound for Madrid Puerta de Atocha, as well as an Alvia train, bound for Huelva, in Andalusia.

The Spanish Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, has declared on the social network X that the last carriages of the Iryo train have derailed, occupying the opposite track, where at that moment the Renfe train to Huelva was circulating. "The collision has been terrible and has caused the overturning of the first two carriages of the Renfe train. The main priority now is the rescue of the victims," he wrote. The accident occurred this evening near the locality of Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba.

As a result of the tragedy, high-speed train service between southern Andalusia and Madrid will remain suspended for at least the entire day on Monday. The news was confirmed by the railway infrastructure operator Adif, which announced that the Madrid-Córdoba, Seville, Malaga and Huelva lines will be out of service. According to Adif sources, the full restoration of the infrastructure could take 48 to 72 hours.

The Iryo company has announced that it has activated all emergency protocols, while passengers of the two trains involved have been evacuated. Meanwhile, rescue teams continue to search for possible victims or survivors among the destroyed carriages.
