Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned the governments of unfriendly countries that any attack on the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would amount to a declaration of war.
The statement followed comments by US President Donald Trump in an interview with Politico, where he called Khamenei a "sick man" and said it is "time to seek new leadership in Iran."
"An attack on the great leader of our country is tantamount to a full-scale war with the Iranian nation," Pezeshkian wrote on his X page.
The unrest in Iran began on December 29, following street protests sparked by a sharp drop in the Iranian rial exchange rate, and spread to most major cities. Over 5,000 people are suspected to have been killed by the Iranian regime since the unrest began.
