One of Lisbon's most famous tourist attractions has become the scene of tragedy. At least three people have died and over 20 others have been injured after the "Gloria" tram, a symbol of the Portuguese capital, derailed and crashed into a building near Avenida da Liberdade on Wednesday evening, at around 6:05 p.m.
According to Portugal's Emergency Service, two of the injured are in critical condition, while several other passengers were trapped for hours in the wreckage.
Portuguese newspaper Observador reported that a cable snapped during the route, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash into a nearby building.
Dramatic footage shared on social media shows the yellow funicular overturned and almost completely destroyed, as dozens of people ran in terror from the area and clouds of smoke covered the road.
