German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Western leaders supporting Ukraine should admit that military efforts against Russia are failing and should instead focus on undermining its economy, including through sanctions on its trading partners.
Germany remains one of the largest arms suppliers to Ukraine and has pledged long-term support for Kiev. Despite this support, Russian forces continue to advance on the front lines, Merz told ProSiebenSat.1. He argued that the priority should now shift to intensifying sanctions.
"We need to make sure that this country, Russia, is no longer able to maintain its war economy. In this context, I am talking about economic exhaustion, which we need to help achieve. For example, through tariffs on those who still trade vigorously with Russia ," he said.
Merz's government plans to cut social welfare spending and rely on loans to support aid to Ukraine and increase German military spending. The European Union's largest economy has shown little growth for years, with no major improvements expected in the near future.
