A new diplomatic clash has erupted between Moscow and Kiev, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared from China that he is ready to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow for a high-level meeting that could lead to an end to the war.
"If Zelensky is ready, let him come to Moscow. The meeting will happen. We have never been against a meeting, as long as it is well prepared and can produce positive results," Putin said from Beijing, during a press conference, where he also acknowledged that Donald Trump had personally requested the meeting.
According to Putin, "Donald asked me if such a meeting was possible. I said, yes, it is possible."
But the reaction from Kiev was immediate and sharp. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibikha, commenting on Putin's invitation, called it "unacceptable" and diplomatically untenable.
"The Russian president is making unacceptable proposals. There are seven other countries that have offered their willingness to host a possible meeting between the leaders," Sibikha said, implying that Ukraine will never hold talks on the aggressor's soil.
