Riots in France, over 2000 arrested and hundreds of stores looted and burned

More than 2,000 people were arrested in France during a fourth night of riots sparked by the killing of a teenager as President Emmanuel Macron postponed a state visit to Germany scheduled for Saturday. The trip would have marked the first state visit by a French president to Germany in 23 years.

About 45,000 police and several armored vehicles were deployed to deal with the most serious crisis facing President Emmanuel Macron since the end of 2018. It is reported that more than 200 police have been injured during these protests.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said more than 700 shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bank branches had been "looted, looted and in some cases burned to the ground since Tuesday".

Nahel M., a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent, was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

The victim's burial ceremony was also performed on Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of people lined up to enter the mosque where the funeral ceremony took place, which was guarded by volunteers in yellow vests, while several dozen passers-by watched from across the street.

The violence in France has not stopped, although official announcements say that there is a decrease in the intensity of violence compared to Friday's protests.

French President Emmanuel Macron also emphasized the age of the protesters, writing on Twitter that "a third of those arrested are young, some of them very young. I call on parents to be more responsible."

Minister Darmanin said that over 300 policemen and firefighters were injured.

Seventeen-year-old Nahel, of Algerian and Moroccan descent, was shot dead during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Nanterre suburb of the French capital. Footage captured by eyewitnesses shows the teenager fleeing in a car while being shot by police.

A few meters away, Nahel M. collides with a car. The person who recorded the moment is heard saying:

"He's dead, it's over, it's all over for him. I don't know what he did, but it's over."

The Nanterre suburb prosecutor's office announced that teenager Nahel later died of his injuries. After the release of the video, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne spoke about the case in the French Senate.

"From this tragic event, we are seeing the expression of a popular gossip, whose source we understand, but we do not accept the way it is being expressed. For many of us it comes from the slums and we share these feelings of pain and sadness. This is followed by a process of destruction. Violence does not solve anything...", wrote the footballer Mbappe, among other things.

French officials have warned the leaders of social networks, especially Snapchat and TikTok, not to allow their use to spread violence.

According to President Macron, social networks are playing a "significant role" in the violence. He announced the postponement of his visit to Germany, which was expected to start on Sunday. /VOA
