Trump goes viral again, awkward joke with Japanese Prime Minister (Video)
Donald Trump

When Donald Trump wants to say something, he doesn't rely on politeness and diplomatic tact, even in front of friends and allies. In statements he made Thursday alongside Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Trump referred to a historical event that involves both countries: the attack on Pearl Harbor.

When a Japanese journalist asked the US president why he did not inform allies, such as Japan, of his intention to attack Iran, Trump made a comparison to the attack that occurred in 1941 and brought the US into World War II.

"You don't have to give too many signs. You know, when we attacked, we attacked very hard and we didn't tell anyone because we wanted it to be a surprise. Who knows better than Japan when it comes to surprises?" Trump said as US officials listening tried to hide their laughter.

And addressing the journalist, he said: "Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor? Okay?"

The room fell silent, The Independent reports, and Trump continued by saying that "he [the reporter] asked me about the surprises. Thanks to that surprise we destroyed 50% and much more than we expected. So I went and told everyone, it's no longer a surprise."

It's been 83 years since the attack, and the US and Japan are now close allies. For Trump, that seems like enough to make an awkward joke.
