Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced that he was summoning the United States ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, over his comments on the death of far-right activist Quentin Derank and denounced foreign interference in French affairs.
Student Quentin Derank was beaten to death by far-left activists. The incident has shocked France.
In its first official response, the Trump administration on Friday denounced the political violence of the far left and called for those responsible to be brought to justice. The US embassy in Paris, headed by Jared Kushner's father, and the State Department's Office of Counterterrorism said they were monitoring the case and warned in posts on X that "the violent radical left is on the rise" and must be treated as a threat to public security.
"We summoned the US ambassador after the American embassy commented on this tragedy (...) which concerns the (French) national community," Jean-Noel Barrot told France Info/France Inter/Le Monde.
"We reject any instrumentalization of this tragedy (...) for political reasons," the French foreign minister added.
"France does not accept lessons on violence, especially from the international reaction," he warned.
