US President Donald Trump said the US will not defend NATO allies that do not spend enough on their defense.
" I think it's common sense. If they don't pay, I'm not going to protect them," the US president told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump went on to say that NATO countries should pay more, as what they are paying now is insufficient.
It is worth noting that Trump has demanded that NATO countries increase their defense spending to 5 percent of their GDP, otherwise he will withdraw from NATO and will not defend them.
Initially, before being elected president, Trump had called for spending to be 2 percent of GDP, which was accepted by most member countries. Then, upon coming to power, Trump called for spending to be increased even more, as 2 percent was not enough.
