US President Donald Trump said he had spoken by phone with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to urge them to stop the border conflict that erupted this week. He warned that there would be no trade deals with either country as long as the fighting continues.
"Currently, we are trading with both countries, but we do not want to make any deals with either of them if they are at war, and I told them so!" Trump wrote on social media, as reported by UNN and Bloomberg.
According to the US president, he has discussed with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who, according to him, have expressed support for an "immediate ceasefire" to reduce tensions.
The border conflict comes at a critical time for Thailand and Cambodia, which are facing economic challenges and the risk of high tariffs of 36% from the US.
Meanwhile, other countries in the region, such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, have benefited from trade deals with the Trump administration. Thailand, which relies heavily on exports, has yet to secure a similar deal.
American authorities emphasize that the US will continue to monitor the situation and exert diplomatic pressure to promote peace in the region.
