United States President Donald Trump no longer includes finasteride in his latest medical report, prompting speculation in the American media about possible reasons for the drug's absence from his current therapy.
Finasteride is a widely used drug to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia. According to Trump's doctors, he used the drug regularly during his first term as president.
The recently released health report mentions three other medications the US president is currently taking, but does not include finasteride. This has sparked interest from the media, which has sought clarification from the White House.
In its response, the White House stated that the report contains all medications considered clinically important to make public and that no information was omitted that would affect the assessment of the president's health condition.
The absence of finasteride from the published list of drugs has brought back into focus debates about the possible side effects of this medication. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the use of finasteride can be associated with sexual side effects, including decreased sexual desire and erectile dysfunction. In addition, anxiety, depression, insomnia and thoughts of self-harm have been reported in certain cases.
Because of these warnings, some American media outlets have speculated that Trump's medical team may have recommended discontinuing the treatment. However, there has been no official confirmation that the president has stopped using finasteride or that such a decision is related to the reported side effects.
The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has also previously warned about the risk of serious mood swings and suicidal thoughts in some users of this medication.
