Trump attacks television, demands closure of satirical shows
Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has launched another verbal attack on the satirical evening shows on American television, known as "late shows", which have been the subject of constant criticism from him for years. In particularly aggressive language, the White House resident once again threatened to revoke the broadcasting licenses of television networks that, according to him, maintain a hostile stance towards him and the conservative MAGA movement.

The president's direct target was comedian Stephen Colbert's CBS show. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump demanded that the network "put him to sleep, NOW," calling Colbert "a miserable disaster." The expression used by the president, in English, not only means to leave the screen, but is also used to describe the euthanasia of animals, which gave the statement an even heavier symbolic load.

CBS has been saying for months that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will end in May, but the president’s direct intervention has reignited the debate over political pressure on the media. In another tweet, Trump wrote that if the late-night news and talk shows are “almost 100% negative” toward him, MAGA, and the Republican Party, then — in his opinion — their valid broadcast licenses should be revoked. “I say YES,” the 79-year-old added, repeating a threat he has made before.

Tensions between the White House and CBS have also worsened over a recent financial settlement. Paramount Pictures, the owner of CBS, paid Trump $16 million to settle a dispute over the editing of an interview given by Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent in the 2024 presidential election.

The situation became even more tense last weekend when CBS News' new director, Barry Weiss, stopped airing a report on the harsh consequences of the Trump administration's deportations of migrants to El Salvador. The journalist and narrator of the material reacted publicly, speaking of "censorship" and a "political decision."

The pressure has not been limited to CBS. Fellow US network ABC temporarily suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel's satirical show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", before reinstating it a few days later after strong public backlash, extending Kimmel's contract for another year, until mid-2027.
