United States President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the US is "taking control" of the Strait of Hormuz from Iran, adding that Washington "will pay for it."
In a phone interview with FOX News, Trump said the United States should have dealt with the Iranian threat "47 years ago."
" We are taking control of the strait. They have nothing left ," the US president said. He added that the US intends to keep the strait under control and, according to him, can even administer it.
" We will become the guardians of the strait and this time we will get paid. We have protected it for 50 years without getting paid, now we will make money ," Trump declared.
According to the American president, Iranian representatives held negotiations with the United States the day before, which lasted 11 hours. He claimed that an agreement was reached on all issues during the meeting, but then the Iranian side demanded changes.
" Everything was agreed upon and after they left the room, they called again saying they had to make some changes ," Trump said.
The US president also stated that Iran is suffering "crushing blows" in the conflict with the United States.
He claimed that Iran's Navy, Air Force and missile capabilities have been nearly neutralized. Trump also added that a number of Iranian leaders have been killed during the conflict, without providing evidence for these claims.
According to FOX News reporting, the United States continued its attacks on Iranian targets on Monday, after Trump declared over the weekend that the ceasefire with Iran was "over."
