US President Donald Trump is demanding that the European Union hit China and India with tariffs of up to 100 percent.
The head of the White House believes that this tactic will force Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump made the demand for crushing tariffs during a meeting between US and EU officials, where there was talk of increasing economic pressure on Moscow.
Trump, who promised to end the conflict on his first day in office, is having trouble brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. The president said he plans to talk to Putin in the coming days about peace negotiations.
The demand to hit China and India with tariffs is justified by the fact that they are the largest buyers of Russian oil, a sector that helps Russia keep its economy and war machine moving.
Last month, the US imposed a 50 percent tariff on goods from India, a measure that included a 25 percent penalty on trade with Russia. The sides are negotiating over trade barriers, and President Trump has said he will speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"I am confident that we will have no difficulty in reaching a successful conclusion for both of our great countries," Trump wrote in a message on his social media account, Truth.
