US President Donald Trump has stated that Ukraine's membership in NATO "was never under consideration" and that this was known long before the clash with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“It was always understood that Ukraine would not be part of NATO, long before Putin. And now they insist. When Zelensky first met with Putin, he said, ‘I want two things: to get Crimea back and for us to become a member of NATO.’ And he didn’t say it very politely. He’s a great salesman,” Trump said in the Politico interview.
Trump's peace plan requires Ukraine to abandon its efforts to join NATO, a condition that Kiev has called unacceptable.
The American president also said that the time has come for elections to be held in Ukraine.
"Do I think it's time for Ukraine to hold elections? Yes. I think so. It's been a long time. It's not going particularly well. Yes, I think it's time. I think it's an important time to hold an election."
According to Trump, "they're using the war as an excuse not to have an election, but I think the Ukrainian people should have that opportunity. And maybe Zelensky would win. I don't know who would win. But they haven't had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about democracy, but it gets to a point where it's not democracy anymore."
