US criticism of freedom in the EU, Kallas responds to Trump: Point the finger at
Kaja Kallas and Donald Trump

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said criticism of freedoms in the EU should be directed elsewhere, "perhaps at Russia," referring to the White House's National Security Strategy report released on Friday.

"The European Union is the essence of freedom ," Kaia Kallas told a European Parliament committee.

"This criticism of freedoms should be directed in another direction. Maybe towards Russia, where freedom of the press is banned, where the opposition is banned, where X or Twitter, as we know it, is also banned ," she said, referring to criticism from Donald Trump's Washington of the fine imposed by European regulators on the X platform last week.

When asked about the American criticism, Kaia Kallas said that "it seems to me that it was done as a provocation" and reiterated that the United States remains the United States' biggest ally.

What does the US national security document say?

The US National Security Strategy document, which was posted on the White House website on Friday, reflects criticism of Europe that was already on display in February in a scathing speech by Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference.

The strategy also appears to support the white supremacist conspiracy theory of the "Great Replacement," according to which white European populations are being deliberately replaced by non-white peoples.

The document says that some countries risk becoming "majority non-European" and that Europe is facing the real and strong prospect of the disappearance of civilization. It goes on to say that " if current trends continue, the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less."

The strategy plan says Europe is facing issues such as  "censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, declining birth rates and the loss of national identities and self-confidence."

"Our goal should be to help Europe correct its current trajectory. We will need a strong Europe to help us compete successfully and to cooperate with us to prevent any adversary from dominating Europe," the US National Security Strategy Document states.
