German Chancellor Responds to Trump: We Don't Need Americans to Save
Donald Trump with European leaders

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has responded to strong statements by Donald Trump about Europe and the US strategy to eradicate European culture.

Merz dismissed the components of the American strategy as fundamentally unsurprising, with the document roughly reflecting what US Vice President JD Vance already said in February at the Munich Security Conference.

"Some of them are plausible, some are understandable and some are unacceptable to us from a European perspective," Merz said of the American strategy.

"I see no need for Americans to try now to save democracy in Europe. If it needed saving, we would be able to handle it ourselves," he added.

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has exploded in criticism of European leaders, describing them as weak and lost.

In an interview with Politico, Trump described Europe as a community of nations "in disintegration" and accused its leaders of being "weak" and incapable of making important decisions.

The US president criticized traditional US allies for failing to control immigration and the war in Ukraine.

“I think they are weak. But I also think they want to be very politically correct. They don’t know what to do. Europe doesn’t even know what to do on trade,” he said.
His comments come at a critical moment, as negotiations over the war in Ukraine are tense and some European leaders express concern that the US could leave Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Trump, however, gave no guarantees on the issue, stressing that Russia has a stronger position than Ukraine.

"I'm friendly with everybody. I have no real enemies. I've known smart leaders and stupid leaders. Europe is not doing a good job in many ways," Trump added.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Trump stated that he had proposed a new draft peace agreement, which was welcomed by some Ukrainian officials, but which had not yet been reviewed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“It would be great if he read it,” Trump said. Zelensky met with leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, stressing his opposition to any territorial concessions to Russia.

Trump criticizes European leaders for their lack of results: “They talk, but they produce no results, and the war continues unabated.” He also demanded that Ukraine hold new elections, questioning the current functioning of democracy there.
