Turkish defense company Aselsan has delivered a wide-ranging package of components that will make up the integrated air and missile defense architecture known as "Steel Dome."
A total of 47 systems, worth a total of $460 million (18.8 billion Turkish lira), arrived on August 27, including SİPER long-range and HİSAR medium-range air defense missile systems, KORKUT self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, ALP radar, and PUHU electronic warfare capabilities.
At the same time, Aselsan is expanding production as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan laid the foundation stone for a new technology base in Oğulbey. The complex will become the company's largest facility to date, covering an area of 6.5 million square meters - equivalent to 900 football stadiums - and will support teams working on the development of the "Steel Dome".
“This is the largest single investment in the defense industry in the history of our Republic. It will also be the largest integrated air defense facility in Europe,” Erdoğan stressed. He added that “in the next 50 years, Turkey will not only meet its own needs, but will also become a country that shapes the world with its technology.”
His statements come just two weeks before one of the world's largest defense exhibitions, DSEI in the United Kingdom, where defense industry companies, government and military leaders, as well as technology innovators will showcase their products and strengthen alliances in an increasingly divided geopolitical context.
At the end of 2024, Turkey's Defense Industry Secretariat announced that defense and space sector exports had reached $7.15 billion, an increase of 29% compared to the previous year.
Aselsan's infrastructure expansion demonstrates the need for increased capacity as the company seeks to make a stronger entry into the European defense market, which has been revitalized by the Russia-Ukraine war. The conflict, now more than three and a half years old, has demonstrated the importance of integrating tools and systems on the battlefield - from satellite imagery to drones and artificial intelligence tools that accelerate operations.
As the largest defense company in Turkey and the main contributor to complex air defense architectures such as "Steel Dome", Aselsan is positioning itself as a key player for other military users in the international arena.
