An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck the province of Malatya, in eastern Turkey, on Saturday morning, causing tremors that were also felt in several neighboring provinces.
According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), the earthquake was recorded at 06:20 local time, with its epicenter in the Battalgazi district. Tremors were also felt in Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli and Sanliurfa.
Turkish authorities have announced that, so far, there are no reports of injured people or damage to buildings.
AFAD announced that emergency teams were immediately deployed to the field to conduct inspections and assess the situation. According to preliminary data, no serious consequences have been identified from the earthquake.
The Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Development, Murat Kurum, also stated that no significant incidents have been reported so far, while verifications in the affected areas continue.
The province of Malatya was among the hardest hit by the catastrophic earthquake of February 2023, a disaster that killed over 53,000 people and caused massive destruction in southeastern Turkey.
