Korean president released from prison after being arrested for declaring martial

South Korea's impeached president, Yoon Suk-yeol, has been released from prison a day after a court overturned his arrest warrant. Footage broadcast on local television channels showed Yoon leaving prison and greeting supporters as he headed to his residence.

His lawyers said the court's ruling confirmed that the president's detention was procedurally flawed. About 55,000 supporters of Yoon gathered in major areas of Seoul, while thousands more protested against him near the Constitutional Court.

He was arrested in January on charges of sedition for imposing martial law in a short time in December. The Constitutional Court is considering whether to formally remove Yoon from office or reinstate him. If the court upholds his impeachment, a national election to find his successor will be held within two months.

Sedition is one of the few criminal charges from which a South Korean president does not enjoy immunity, and the crime is punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty. A Gallup Korea poll shows that 60 percent of respondents want Yoon to step down.
