NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that increasing European defense budgets, as well as production by military equipment industries, is necessary for Europe's security.
"We need to spend more on our security. But we also need to rapidly increase defense production on both sides of the Atlantic...for a long time, we have produced too little ," Rutte told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
NATO includes most of Europe, as well as the United States and Canada. Rutte said it needs more ammunition, ships, tanks, planes, but also satellites and drones.
European countries are taking steps to increase defense spending and continue support for Ukraine after US President Donald Trump suspended US military aid to Kiev and raised doubts about Washington's commitment to European allies.
He has repeatedly called for European countries to contribute more to the defense of their continent.
EU leaders held a high-level meeting on Thursday on the continent's security, where they discussed expanding defense spending beyond strict budget limits for other sectors.
Rutte also said he has met with many heads of defense manufacturing companies and has asked them to respond to the increased demand./ VOA
