The big boss and founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, known as an associate of "El Chapo" was arrested in Texas, United States. Joaquin Guzman Lopez, El Chapo's son (real name Joaquin Guthman) was arrested with him. It is learned that the arrest was made in El Paso, Texas. He has been on the run for decades and is considered the world's biggest narcotics trafficker.
At El Chapo's trial in 2019, his lawyers claimed that El Mayo was the real head of the organization. They accused El Mayo of corrupting the entire Mexican government in order to live free.
The DEA offered a $15 million reward for El Mayo's capture.
US authorities say the Sinaloa Cartel is the largest supplier of narcotics to the US, mainly cocaine and fentanyl. The latter is considered the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45.
Thabada was for decades the head of the cartel's smuggling operations, but kept a low profile.
They face a range of charges from US prosecutors for their role in the gang's activities, particularly the production and trafficking of fentanyl, a highly lethal opioid.
