Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, on his election as head of the country.
Putin said that "Russia has been and will be a reliable partner of Iran."
"Honorable Mr. Hosseini Khamenei, please accept my sincere congratulations on your election as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Vladimir Putin said in his statement.
The Russian president also expressed confidence that Khamenei will continue his father's work and unite the Iranian people in the face of trials.
In addition, Putin declared Moscow's continued support and solidarity with Tehran:
"Russia has been and will be a reliable partner of the Islamic Republic," the Kremlin said.
In his message, Vladimir Putin again characterized the attack on Iran as an act of armed aggression.
