Ukrainians return to the beach in the middle of the war, the authorities call on

Some of the beaches in the Ukrainian city of Odesa have officially reopened, but officials have warned holidaymakers to watch out for water mines.

Since the start of the Russian invasion, the beaches have been closed and the city itself has been bombed several times by opposing troops. Even on these hot days, although people can frequent the beaches, they will have to leave if the air raid sirens sound.

Odesa is one of the main ports of Ukraine and has one of the most important military bases there. Because of this strategic positioning, the entire territory has been attacked with shells and surrounded with hundreds of water mines.

" Mines can get stuck in organic waste and so it is difficult to dictate them. At the end of summer, the wind gets strong here and the mines can get even closer to the coast ," ecologist Vladyslav Balinsky told Reuters.

"I dived to the depths, up to 200 meters from the shore. There are plants, jugs, tree branches and inert waste ."

The governor of the Odesa region, Oleh Kiper, said on his Telegram channel that the decision to open the beaches was made jointly with the military leaders. He said that the beaches will remain open from 8 am to 8 pm.

Coastguards said anti-mine nets were placed around the beach to prevent them from entering the shallows.
