Profiles and social pages used to promote illegal travel for migrants.
With hundreds of posts and content, human traffickers advertised traffic to arrive in Italy from the coast of North Africa.
And to attract new customers, they offered cheap prices for women and children, as well as real family travel packages, even "VIP" trips.
Ticket price, approximately 4600 euros per person. Migrants could transfer the amount for the purchase of the travel ticket at money transfer points.
At least a thousand social sites, which acted as real travel agencies, were closed by the Palermo Police after various investigations: 728 social profiles were closed and others are in the process of being closed. These are mainly accounts used by traffickers active in Libya, but also in Egypt, a country from which no ship departures have been registered, but from which organizations manage migrants' journeys.
The closure of sites used as a tool for promoting human trafficking was also achieved thanks to the cooperation with "Meta".
Analyzes were also carried out by the police of the Palermo Flying Squad, starting from the operational model used by criminal associations, active in migrant trafficking, which use social networks to advertise their illegal activities and sponsor transport services that are offered to immigrants.
The agents' analysis activity, which began last November, made it possible to launch investigations and carry out checks in the context of ongoing investigations, as well as to obtain information on the places of departure or transit of migrants and on new modes of transport. , for the purpose of monitoring the phenomenon and the direct exchange of information with the Libyan and Tunisian police bodies.
