Sky News reporter James Matthews reported from Tampa, Florida that it remains unclear how badly the state has been hit.
The situation will become clear later. Hurricane Milton has left the country in darkness.
"I have to say, as predicted, it was an extremely strong storm. We felt the force of the wind, the rain. There was a storm surge at coastal points in Central Florida. So obviously under these circumstances, people's safety would be significantly endangered", said the witness.
"We will only really know when daylight breaks, around 7.30am (12.30pm UK time). So give it six hours, I think, when the authorities can go in and assess the damage, just to calculate the costs.
Mind you, we are in a country where Hurricane Helene hit less than two weeks ago. This left 230 casualties. Once again, Florida will count the cost ," adds the reporter.
