Executive order/ Trump lifts sanctions on Syria, but not on al-Assad

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order lifting sanctions on Syria, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt announced at a press conference.

According to Leavitt, the order will lift sanctions on Syria, while maintaining sanctions on former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his associates and others associated with the former regime. "This is, once again, an action that the president promised and with which he shocked the world when he visited Saudi Arabia," the spokeswoman said, referring to Trump's meeting last month with the new president of Syria, former jihadist Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Leavitt said Trump had written again to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to ask him to lower interest rates.

A chart held by the spokeswoman said the US "gap" should be somewhere between 0.25% in Switzerland and 0.50% in Japan.

"Jerome, as usual, you are too late. You have cost the United States a fortune and you continue to do so! You must lower the (interest) rate, many, hundreds of billions of dollars are lost," the sign held by Leavitt read, in a message that the spokeswoman said Trump wrote himself.

In a later post on his social media platform Truth, Trump added: "Powell and his entire board of directors should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen to America. They have one of the easiest, yet most prestigious jobs in America, and they failed and continue to fail. If they did their jobs properly, our country would save trillions of dollars in interest payments. The board of directors is sitting there, so they are to blame too. We should be paying 1 percent interest, or better!"
