Fears of a return to conflict with Iran are growing, as one analyst warns that tensions could lead to a resumption of fighting before a new round of negotiations can take place.
Foad Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Al Jazeera that the Iranian military is "losing patience." According to him, there is a possibility that a military escalation will occur before diplomatic talks resume.
Izadi stressed that Iran is willing to make concessions on its nuclear program, referring to the 2015 agreement with the Obama administration. However, he argued that the current US demands are unachievable.
" The Iranian delegation hoped to repeat a similar agreement, but the US is demanding from Iran things that it cannot give ," he said, mentioning in particular the missile arsenal that, according to him, is necessary for the country's defense.
The analyst also questioned the US Department of Defense's estimate of the cost of the war, reported at $25 billion. According to him, this amount is lower than the real cost, suggesting that the actual costs may be higher.
Izadi's statements represent an analytical interpretation and do not constitute an official position of the Iranian authorities.
