The most expensive US wars and the most 'hated' American presidents!

The latest war between the United States and Iran is proving to be among the most opposed by American public opinion, while at the same time being associated with significant financial costs, compared to the largest conflicts of recent decades.

At the start of the conflict in 2026, during the presidency of Donald Trump, about 43 percent of Americans expressed disapproval of the war. Within a short period, that percentage rose to 60 percent, making the conflict among the most unpopular in modern U.S. history.

In comparison, the Iraq War (2003–2011), launched during the presidency of George W. Bush, saw opposition rise from 23 percent to 50 percent. The war in Afghanistan (2001–2021) also began under Bush, where public disapproval rose sharply, from just 9 percent to 46 percent over the years.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam War (1955–1975), begun during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, ended with disapproval levels reaching around 60 percent, reflecting one of the most turbulent periods in American political history. In contrast, the Korean War (1950–1953), during the presidency of Harry S. Truman, followed a different trajectory, with initial disapproval of 49 percent falling to 36 percent by the conflict's end.

In addition to public perception, the war with Iran is also notable for its high daily cost. In the early days of the conflict, costs reached about $1.88 billion per day, and then stabilized at about $1 billion per day until a ceasefire was reached. So far, the total cost of this conflict is estimated at about $45.3 billion over a period of about 40 days.

However, these figures remain low compared to the long wars that the US has waged over the years. The war in Iraq cost about $2 trillion, while the war in Afghanistan cost about $2.3 trillion. The conflict in Vietnam is estimated at about $1 trillion, while the war in Korea cost about $389 billion.

These data show that, although the war with Iran is shorter in duration, it is characterized by a high daily cost and a high level of public opposition, reflecting a marked shift in Americans' attitude toward military interventions abroad.
