The Israeli army intensifies the bombing in Gaza, the health system in collapse

Israel says it is planning to intensify its attacks on Gaza from Saturday night, as Israeli commanders visited frontline units to rally troops who have piled up on the Gaza border.

Israeli Admiral Daniel Hagari, speaking to reporters in response to a question about a possible ground invasion of Gaza, said on Saturday: “We will deepen our attacks to minimize the risks to our forces in the next stages of the war. We will increase the attacks from today.”

"We will enter Gaza," Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi told an infantry brigade on Saturday. Gaza is densely populated, the enemy is preparing many things there - but we are also preparing for them," he said.

Meanwhile, Israel says it killed "terrorist operatives" from Hamas and Islamic Jihad who were planning attacks in an airstrike on the Al-Ansar mosque in Jenin in the West Bank early Sunday.

The attack hit the Al-Ansar mosque, which the Israeli military said on Sunday "was used by terrorists as a command center to plan attacks and as a base for their execution".

Hamas claimed it planned to release two more hostages "for humanitarian reasons," but Israel refused, a Hamas spokesman said Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that "we will not refer to the false propaganda from Hamas" and "will continue to act in every way to return all kidnapped and missing people home."

Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for the Izz al-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, said it had informed Qatar on Friday of Hamas' intention to release the two hostages.

Hezbollah is "at the heart of the battle", said the deputy head of the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon. Sheikh Naim Kassem vowed that Israel would pay a heavy price whenever it launched its ground offensive in Gaza.

Gaza's health care system is "facing collapse", Médecins Sans Frontières has said. The international medical organization said on Saturday that Gaza's hospitals were "overburdened and under-resourced".

Doctors in Gaza have warned that 130 premature babies are in "immediate danger due to lack of fuel".

"The world cannot simply watch as these babies are killed by the siege in Gaza," said Melanie Ward, chief executive of Palestinian Medical Aid.
